Voyageurs to Fight Cancer and Honour Seniors This Weekend

Voyageurs to Fight Cancer and Honour Seniors This Weekend

The Laurentian Voyageurs basketball and hockey teams have a busy couple of days coming up at the Ben Avery Gym and Countryside Arena.  On top of seven home games between the four teams, the weekend will be highlighted by a pair of games that will aid in the fight against breast cancer and a trio of games that will serve as the final regular season home games for graduating team members.

Friday night's women's basketball game against Algoma, with a 6pm scheduled tip-off, will serve as their annual Shoot for the Cure game.  This is the 13th season of the Shoot for the Cure initiative where all 48 U SPORTS women's basketball programs raise funds to support the fight against breast cancer.  To date, the campaign has raised over $1.3 million.  The women's hockey team is joining in this year's battle with their second annual Pink the Rink game on Saturday afternoon as they host York at 4pm.  All proceeds raised from these two games will be donated to the Northern Cancer Foundation.

Later on Saturday evening, the men's hockey game and both the women's and men's basketball games will see graduating players on each roster be recognized in their final regular season home games in the blue and gold.  The women's hockey team will be honouring their seniors on Feb. 15th.

The men's hockey team will send off the likes of Tyler Cooper, Jayme Forslund, Luke McCaw and Derek Varrin while the women's basketball team will bid adieu to Kayla Deschatelets and Danielle Reid.  The men's basketball team will be graduating a quintet of players with Fafa Ceesay, Sam Ivey, Haroun Mohamed, Litha Ncanisa and two-time reigning U SPORTS player of the year, Kadre Gray, all set to depart after this season.

The men's hockey game is scheduled for a 7:30pm puck drop against McGill on Saturday with the women tipping off at 6pm against Guelph and the men scheduled for an 8pm tip.
