WBB | Voyageurs Take 2 of 3 in Montreal

The Laurentian Voyageurs women’s basketball team kicked off their exhibition season with a tournament hosted by UQAM in Montreal.  The Voyageurs faced off against the host Citadins, the Toronto Varsity Blues and the MacEwan Griffins over the 3 day tournament.  After dropping their first game of the tournament, the Voyageurs would scratch out a pair of overtime wins to finish with a 2-1 record.

On Friday night, against the Citadins, the Voyageurs got off to a jittery start as they fell behind early.  Despite a strong run in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 10, the team couldn’t overcome their 24 turnovers, falling 69-45 to the hosts.  L’Ashante Henry led the Voyageurs with 14 points and 6 rebounds.

On Saturday afternoon, the Voyageurs tipped off against a familiar OUA foe in the Toronto Varsity Blues.  The team dropped the jitters that plagued them the night before and pulled out a 77-74 overtime victory.  The squad was led by Meghan Forestell who had 25 points on 7/9 shooting (6/8 from three) and L’Ashante Henry who finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Mackenzie Robinson was also key, grabbing 10 rebounds in the victory.

Head Coach Jason Hurley commented on the win, “It was a good bounce back win.  The girls played with confidence and positive emotion.  Being down 10 at the half, we came out and stayed the course and came away with a much needed win.”

On Sunday morning, the Voyageurs wrapped up their tournament with a 72-68 OT victory over the MacEwan Griffins.  Meghan Forestell had 17 points in the win, with numerous clutch 3-pointers down the stretch and in overtime.  L’Ashante Henry chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds and rookie point guard, Kayla Deschatelets, had 12 points and 7 assists in the victory.  As a result of her strong play over the course of the weekend, Forestell was named a tournament all-star.

With their first pre-season tournament in the books, the Voyageurs will prepare for their annual alumni game on Oct. 15th before heading back to Montreal for the Redbird Classic from Oct. 21-23.
