MHKY | Voyageurs Double Up Lakers to Tighten Grip on Playoffs

The Laurentian Voyageurs played the Nipissing Lakers this Tuesday February 5th morning in the final game of this year's '705 Challenge Cup'.

The Voyageurs commenced this game with an audience of over 600 elementary school children from the City of Greater Sudbury.

A must win game for the Voyageurs as they are currently in a playoff race with the Lakers and do not have a substantial point lead.

This was a very physical match up as both teams play physically and both had playoff opportunities on the line.

The scoring would start early for the Voyageurs as Paul-Antoine Deslauriers would squeak one through an open hole on Brent Moran from Danny Lepage and Marc-Antoine Gagnon

Just one period later the Voyageurs would beat Brent Moran on a power play opportunity at 7:24. Russel Nowry would captain the power play and would send a crisp backdoor pass to a streak Nicolas Dionne. Dionne would tap in his seventeenth goal and the second goal of the game making for a 2-0 game.

Just two minutes later Jacob Smith showed his patience as he was left alone out front of Brent Moran, Smith would then send the puck top corner making it a 3-0 game. Nicolas Dionne and Richard Therrian would pick up the assists on the goal.

The Voyageurs would make this game a 4-0 lead early in the third period as Gavin Apperson would be fed out front for the one timer from Hayden Hopkins on the short handed opportunity.

Unfortunately, the Lakers offence would start too late as Lucas Brown and Colin Campell's efforts would come too late in this match up as the Voyageurs had already established the lead.

The Voyageurs travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee-Gees and the Carleton Ravens on February 8th and 9th in hopes to protect their point lead in the playoff race and protect a three game win streak.
