MHKY | Penalty Trouble Costs Voyageurs

The Voyageurs were heading down to Kingston on a current four game losing streak, and the Paladins a three game loss streak meaning that whoever would take this matchup would snap a current drought from the win category. 

 

The trip was already off to a poor start as the Voyageurs accidentally left their jerseys in Sudbury. The Paladins graciously loaned the Voyageurs old RMC uniforms for the match, presenting an intersting visual for the fans.  

 

The Voyageurs fell into some powerplay trouble early in the matchup giving the Paladins two powerplay goals. Paquette and Maguire would both be accredited a powerplay goal on the Vees. Paquette opened the scoring nine minutes into the first, then Maguire doubled the Paladins' lead seventeen seconds into the second.

 

The Voyageurs would rally over the next thirty minutes for a four goal effort and a Voyageur lead. 

 

The first of the Voyageurs' goals came from defenceman Cole Peck, who would score his first goal of the season. Peck's goal came from the point and beat Van schubert. Paul-Antoine Deslaurier and William Gignac would get the assists. 

 

The second goal came from Brett Jacklin less than three minutes later. Like his teammate, Jacklin would score on a long but hard shot beating Van schubert over the shoulder. Tyler Cooper would get the assist. This would be Jacklin's seventh goal and now make him the Laurentian goal leader. The goal would send the teams into the third tied 2-2. 

 

The third goal would come from Russel Nowry three minutes into the third. Nowry was given the puck close to the net and beat Van schubert with a backhand. This would be Nowry's fifth goal on the season and would be the goal to open up the six-goal third period in Kingston. Cooper and Varrin would get the assists, and it gave the Voyageurs their first lead of the night.

 

The last and final Voyageur goal would be from William Gignac and would be the goal to give the Voyageurs the 4-2 lead. Gignac's goal would come on the powerplay, just under halfway through the third. Wilkie and Nowry would get the assists. With four straight goals and a two-goal lead with ten minutes left, the Voyageurs seemed to be in control. But the Paladins would pick up the pace and took over the game.  

 

The Paladins would answer the Voyageurs with another power play goal by Lamport, and the start of an impressive four-goal rally for the win. Lamport's second of the game came with just over eight minutes left. With five minutes remaining, Larabie tied the game at 4. Sixty-five seconds later, Laurentian's Derek Varrin took an interference penalty. It took the Paladins just twenty-two seconds to bury their fourth powerplay goal of the night and regain the lead. The Voyageurs then took another penalty with two and a half minutes left, and by the time they killed it off and pulled the goalie there was only ten seconds left in the game. The Voyageurs turned the puck over on the zone entry and the Paladins scored the empty-net goal with one second left for the 6-4 win. 

 

The Voyageurs were outshot 25-10 in the third and 46-30 overall. Savard made 40 saves for the fifth time this season, while Van schubert stopped 26 of the Voyageurs' shots. Both teams were 50% on the powerplay, the difference being the Voyageurs went 1/2 while the Paladins went 4/8.   

 

The Voyageurs will play the Queen's Gaels next and look for an opportunity to split the weekend in their last game of 2019.
