MHKY | Voyageurs' Comeback Attempt Falls Short

MHKY | Voyageurs' Comeback Attempt Falls Short

The Laurentian Voyageurs men's hockey team played their third last game of the season this afternoon against the Nipissing Lakers. The Lakers before this matchup were on a current seven game losing streak and a record of 7-17-3 whereas the Voyageurs were on a four game losing streak and a record of 5-18-2.

With neither team making the playoffs and this being the Lakers' last game of the season the matchup was still exciting with a total of nine goals scored.

The Lakers started the scoring early after tallying three goals on Nick Donofrio in the first period, with with Lindsey, Collins and Brown all being accredited a goal. The Voyageurs would answer late in the first after Danny Lepage was able to beat Francis Asselin on a short handed opportunity with the help of Ben Morris

Both the Lakers and Vees would add another goal in the second making for a 4-2 score heading into the third. For the Voyageurs, David Elford would score his fourth goal on the season with just forty-four seconds left in the second to bring the Voyageurs within two.

The Voyageurs would score two more in the third but they would not score enough to send them to overtime. Russel Nowry would score his eighth goal on the season just three minutes into the third and Danny Lepage and Ben Morris would get the assist. The Lakers Ottereyes would add an insurance goal and extending the Lakers lead to two goals over the Vees but Noah Kalsner-Lowe would answer the Lakers three minutes later for his third goal of the season. Marc-Antoine Gagnon would get the assist on the last Voyageur goal of the matchup.

The Lakers would fend off the Vees in what looked like an almost promising offensive push by the Vees and send the Voyageurs back to Sudbury with another loss on the season. Both teams recorded 39 shots on goal, with Donofrio making 34 saves in his second start of the season while Asselin stopped 35 shots from the Voyageurs.

The Voyageurs will finish their season in Ottawa against the first place Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees this up coming weekend.
