MHKY | Voyageurs Fall 6-3 to Mustangs
On Friday morning, the men's hockey team lost 6-3 to the Western Mustangs during Western's kid's day game.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start, jumping out to the early 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the first period when Mitchell Brooks found the back of the net. A few minutes later, Luke Karaim increased the Mustangs lead to 2 as he was able to beat Joel Vienneau. The scoring continued for the Mustangs when they found the back of the net again at 18:16 of the first period when Karaim scored his second of the period and the game.
The Voyageurs, sparked by the 3-0 defecit they found themselves in, were determined to strike back. And strike back they did, twice, in the last minute of the first period. First, Christopher Smith scored on the powerplay at 19:18 with assists going to Nick Esposto and Nicolas Dionne. Then, just nine seconds later, Darcy Haines scored off a pass from Jacob Smith to cut the Mustangs lead to 3-2.
The Vees scored their third unanswered goal at 10:44 of the second when Vincent Llorca extended his five game pointstreak to tie the game at 3. Graham Yeo and Brent Pedersen picked up the assists on Llorca's goal. The Mustangs would eventually regain their lead before the period ended, when Mike DiPaolo scored at 17:41 to give the Mustangs a 4-3 lead.
The Vees were eventually overrun by the Mustangs in the last frame, being outshot 11-4 and unable to score. The Mustangs would add two goals in the final two minutes of the period for a final of 6-3.
The Voyageurs are back in action tomorrow when they play the Guelph Gryphons at 3PM.
