MHKY | Voyageurs Need Extra Time to Down Paladins

The Laurentian Voyageurs Mens hockey team played against the Royal Military College on a Friday night game to open a two game series against the Queens Gaels and the Paladins

In a game full of action and opportunity the Voyageurs and RMC would battle through three periods of action and as well an overtime period as neither team was able to solve the puzzle.

A notable mention for both goaltenders in this match up as they both played outstanding matches through almost sixty-five minutes of overtime. RMC's Brad Van Schubert made forty-one saves against a Voyageurs offence that was firing on all cylinders. On the Voyageurs side Mackenzie Savard made multiple athletic and arguably 'impossible' saves that kept the Voyageurs in the game.

In a game littered aggressiveness the Voyageurs were able to score first as they took advantage of a Vees power play. More specifically, Nicolas Dionne the Voyageurs captain beat the RMC net minder off a rebound sent on net from a powerful Zach Wilkie blue line shot. Richard Therrian would pick up the assist as well on Dionne's goal.

It would take just eight minutes into the second period for the Voyageurs to score yet again on RMC. Zach Wilkie led a two on one charge down into the RMC zone where he would feed Hayden Hopkins for a cross crease tap in giving Wilkie his second assist in the game and Hopkins the goal making the game 2-0 Voyageurs.

After the second intermission RMC's offence would finally find a set of legs as Cameron Lamport would feed an open Rhett Willcox in the Voyageurs slot for an open net and therefore sparking the RMC offence and making the game 2-1 early in the third.

As RMC was grinding in the dying minutes of the third period a defensive breakdown would cause the puck to sneak past Mackenzie Savard. The goal would be accredited too Nicholas Bissonette with the assists going to Cameron Lamport and Rhett Wilcox.

After a late goal in RMC's favour overtime would ensue and Mackenzie Savard would find himself to be the star of the show. After a few back to back saves Savard would send the puck up ice on a stretch pass to Nicolas Dionne who would beat Van Schubert five hole on break away and finally put an end to this match up.

The Voyageurs take the win against RMC and play the Queens Gaels come February 2nd in hopes to clinch the playoffs.
