MHKY | Voyageurs Drop Opener to Gaels

MHKY | Voyageurs Drop Opener to Gaels
The Laurentian Voyageurs opened the 2019-2020 University hockey seasons this Friday October 4th against the Queen's Gaels.

Voyageur fans appeared from far and wide after a long off-season from Voyageur hockey.

The Vees and Gaels would stay neutral until two defensive turnovers provided opportunities for the Gaels to capitalize on. After just six minutes of play the Gaels very own Matthew Hotchkiss would pot his very first OUA goal on Mackenzie Savard and open the scoring.

The second goal on a Voyageur turnover would come from Alex Row just three minutes later giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

The second period held zero goals for either team but Laurentian was awarded two unsuccessful power play opportunities. The Gaels very own Luke Richardson remained unbeatable after twenty-two shots.

The third started at 2-0 Queen's and the Vees came out knowing they had an uphill battle against the former Queen's Cup champions. It took only six minutes for Paul-Antoine Deslauriers to slam home his first goal of the season after being fed a cross-crease pass from Julian Makray and David Elford

After cutting the lead in half, the Gaels found themselves with yet another defensive turnover scoring opportunity. Ryan Crawford would net the third goal on Mackenzie Savard with just under half the third period remaining.

The Gaels would add insult to injury with an empty net goal and make the final 4-1 Gaels.

The Voyageurs drop the first game of the season 4-1 against the Gaels but look to even series tomorrow at 2:30pm at Countryside Arena.
