MHKY | Fast-Striking Lakers Sink Voyageurs
The Laurentian Voyageurs men's hockey team took a midweek road trip to play the Nipissing Lakers this Wednesday November 20th.
The Lakers won the previous matchup against the Vees in a shootout on October 18th. Up until this day the Lakers had an unfortunate drought of wins as they went on an eight game losing streak.
After a scoreless first period, the Lakers would stretch their offensive legs that were previously at bay as they would put up six goals on the Vees in the last two frames. Lubwele and Ottereyes would score two a piece, Brown and Collins would get the remainder. The Lakers opened the floodgates early in the second period, as Lubwele scored his first at the 1:06 mark, then netted his second just seven seconds later. The Lakers outshot the Voyageurs 22-10 in the period, and led 3-1 heading into the third. The Voyageurs started to fight back, but the Lakers would score three goals in a 2:07 span to put the game out of reach.
The Vees would not let Talor Joseph get the win with a shutout as they were able to score not one, but two goals. The first goal came from Brett Jacklin, who would score his team-leading fifth goal on the season. William Gignac and Zach Wilkie would pick up the assists.
The second would be from Russel Nowry after he was awarded a gracious opportunity down low on the net. Danny Lepage and Paul-Antoine Deslaurier would pick up the assist.
The Lakers would snap a current eight game losing streak and send the Vees home with a mid week loss. Savard, by far the busiest goalie in the OUA, would make forty-three saves on the night and Lachance would make nine after relieving Savard from his post. The Voyageurs were outshot 58-33. This is the tenth time this year the Vees have given up more than 40 shots, and the second time they've given up more than 50 shots.
The Vees have two tough opponents on the weekend the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees. Carleton is first in the East with a record of 12-2-0, and third in the country. The Gee-Gees are fourth in the East at 7-4-0, and sixth in the country. The Vees take on Carleton Saturday night, and Ottawa Sunday afternoon at Countryside Arena.
