WHKY | Voyageurs Show Well in New England

The Voyageurs women's hockey team headed to the Boston area for a trio of exhibition games to start the 2017-18 season.

The Voyageurs began their trip at Boston College against the Screaming Eagles on Friday afternoon, but were shut out 6-0 by their opponents.

The Vees held their own in the first frame as they kept NCAA's fourth ranked team off the scoresheet. However, the Vees were not able to come up with a goal of their own, either.

The scoring started early in the second for the Screaming Eagles, as Kenzie Kent found the back of the net just 53 seconds into the period. The score remained 1-0 for Boston College until close to the end of the second period when their lead doubled thanks to Daryl Watts at 18:44.

The Screaming Eagles took over the third period as they added four more goals giving them a 6-0 lead to hold onto until the final buzzer.

On Saturday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team were beaten by the Providence Friars 3-2 in their second game in as many days on this road trip.

The Friars opened the scoring early in the first period, as Meaghan Rickard scored at 1:34.

Providence held on to their one goal advantage until 9:56 of the second period when Maureen Murphy doubled the Friars' lead. The Voyageurs cut into the two goal defecit and scored the teams first goal of the 2017/2018 season at 14:18 of the second. Regan Toltesi capitalized on a rebound while Myla McCormick and Natalie Lamarche picked up assists. The Friars answered back before the end of the period when Blair Parent restored the two goal advantage at 18:32.

The Voyageurs would again inch their way back, this time thanks to Morgan McCann who scored just over the halfway mark in the third period. This, unfortunately, was as close as the Voyageurs would come in their afternoon match and the game ended with the Friars on top 3-2.

The trip ended on Sunday with a visit to the Holy Cross Crusaders. With a rookie-heavy line-up, the Voyageurs fell 7-0.

The trip proved to be a good measuring stick for the Voyageurs who now prepare to host Ottawa at home on Friday night in their final exhibition game of the year.
