WHKY | Voyageurs Fall to Lakers to Open Season

The Laurentian Voyageurs commenced their season at home against the Nipissing Lakers in one of the battles for the annual 705 Challenge Cup. The secondary event held today was the annual 'School Day Game' with over 500 students from various elementary schools around the Sudbury area coming to support the Vees.

An always exciting match up between the two teams, as both the Cup and Northern bragging rights are at stake, the Lakers broke Shanna Dolighan first when Maria Dominico was able to score from a sharp angle shot on the goal line making for a 1-0 lead with eight minutes left in the first period.

Morgan McCann, one of the Vees' assistant captains would not let Danika Ranger hold her shut-out for long when she scored her first goal of the season after Payton Bray took a long shot on Ranger who then redirected towards McCann making for an easy tap in. Regan Toltesi picked up the secondary assist.

The Lakers offense would stay rolling after a late goal in the second by Hunter Mosher and Maria Dominco potting her second late in the third giving the Lakers a 3-1 lead over the Vees' and a victory towards the 705 Challenge Cup.

The Vees will look to get into the win column on October 25th when they visit the Waterloo Warriors.
