WHKY | Voyageurs Outshoot Badgers in Tough 3-1 Loss

WHKY | Voyageurs Outshoot Badgers in Tough 3-1 Loss

On Sunday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team travelled to St. Catharines and were outscored 3-1 by the Brock Badgers in a close matinee battle.

Despite outshooting the Badgers 16-10 in the first period, it was Brock who struck first as Maggie Spratt-Mallick snuck one by first-year goalie Romana Kiapesova on the power play, giving the Badgers a 1-0 lead at 15:38.

The second period was nearly identical as the Voyageurs continued to pepper Brock's goaltender with shots, but to no avail. The Vees outshot the Badgers 12-7 in the period, for a 40 minute total of 28-17, but were still unable to score. Late in the period again, Brock's Amanda Ieradi beat Kiapesova doubling the Badgers' lead.

The Vees, desperate to get back into the game in the third period, finally got on the board as Annie Sheridan scored at 4:58, cutting the two-goal advantage in half. Sam Morell picked up her team-leading fifth point of the season.

The Vees would be unable to tie the game in the remaining time in the final frame, and Brock would add an empty-netter to seal the deal at 18:50.

With the loss, the Voyageurs finish a tough road weekend 0-2 and currently sit three points within striking distance of a playoff spot as just five points separate the second to ninth placed teams in the conference.

The Voyageurs are back at home next weekend as they welcome the Toronto Varsity Blues (Saturday, 3:50pm) and Ryerson Rams (1:50pm) to Countryside Arena.
