WHKY | Veerman Leads Voyageurs to Victory

On Friday night, captain Ellery Veerman led the Voyageurs to victory with a two-goal performance as the Voyageurs beat the Windsor Lancers 4-1.

The Voyageurs were off to a bit of a slow start in the first period as Windsor outshot the Vees 15-5. Shanna Dolighan stood tall in the Voyageurs net however, as she made all 15 saves. The first period ended in a scoreless draw.

Samantha Morell kicked off the scoring parade with her team-leading sixth goal of the season at 9:42 on the powerplay as she picked up a loose puck off the faceoff and wristed one home. Annie Sheridan and Ellery Veerman picked up assists on Morell's goal.

Windsor responded quickly as Muna Fadel picked up a loose rebound at 10:12 evening the score.

Veerman started her take over as she found a loose puck in the slot and wired home her first goal of the evening at 14:32 as Morgan McCann and Jessica Staats picked up assists on the play.

Veerman would add another with just nine seconds left in the second period as she scooped up a rebound and slid it between Lancer goalie Molly Jenkin's legs, putting the Voyageurs up 3-1 heading into the intermission. Staats picked up her second assist of the game on the play while Brooklyn Davis also got on the score sheet.

The third period was all Vees as they kept the Lancers from earning any viable scoring chances and added another to their goal tally, as Abbey Caldwell scored her first career OUA goal to give the Vees a 4-1 lead. Taylor Weber assisted on the play and Davis picked up her second assist of the game.

Jessica Staats left her mark on the Voyageurs as she racked up two points and Dolighan earned a win in her first OUA start. The Vees now head into the Christmas exam break tied for ninth place in the conference. The Vees will look to resume their push for the post season in 2018.
