WHKY | Voyageurs Add Local Standout, Chomiak

Coach Stacey Colarossi is excited to announce that local standout, Katie Chomiak, will be joining the Voyageurs women's hockey team for the 2020-21 season.

Chomiak, a Sudbury Lady Wolves and Mississauga Chiefs product, still has not settled on a program to study, with offers from the Nursing, Social Work and Psychology programs on the table, but being able to take that program at home is a great opportunity for the 5'7" power forward.  "I've learned a lot about myself this year," she said.  "I've learned that I'm more of a homebody and love to be close to my family and friends. I also learned that I knew I wanted to take a professional program such as Nursing or Social Work and I knew Laurentian had the programs that I wanted."

While, on the ice, Chomiak sees herself as a "hard worker who battles hard in the corners but who can also make heads up plays that will make a positive impact in the game", Coach Colarossi sees her game as very well rounded.  She described Chomiak as "a strong and powerful skater who adds speed and size through the middle along with her heavy shot which makes her a threat offensively.  Her faceoff statistics are outstanding and she will contribute to puck possession off the draw."

While there is always a learning curve as student-athletes begin their university careers, Chomiak's experience at an elite level should help to shorten that curve.  Playing in the Provincial Women's Hockey League (PWHL) with Mississauga this season, tallying 12 points in 25 games thus far, Chomiak was a member of the Sudbury Lady Wolves in the seasons prior, culminating with a silver medal at the Esso Cup National Championship last season where she tallied seven points in seven games in the tournament.

Coach Colarossi is excited that Chomiak has committed to playing with her hometown Voyageurs after following her through her minor hockey career.  "I have watched Katie develop from Peewee through Midget AA & Junior.  Her on-ice development and personal growth has been evident.  It is important to keep elite talent in the North as it shows that you can play competitive hockey while staying at home and getting a quality education.  I am excited to see what the next chapter brings for her and looking forward to coaching another Northern athlete."

For Chomiak, despite still being the playoffs with Mississauga, she is already looking forward to next season.  "I think the rookies coming in will have a great impact on the team next year. I'm excited to start next season and continue to play the game I love."
