The Voyageurs men's soccer team came away with a big win on Sunday afternoon as they upset the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues, 2-1. Currently, the Blues are the #2 ranked team in the OUA East Division, sitting six points ahead of the Voyageurs with just two games remaining in the regular season schedule.
The Voyageurs were the first offense to strike when Kieran Ezzard set up Jacob Gramegna who put his first of the season past the Blues keeper in the 39th minute. The Blues responded six minutes later when Marko Mandekic found an open net to knot the game at 1-1.
The temperature outside got cooler, but the heat on the field was still high as both team's upped their offensive attacks, looking to break the tie early in the second half. The Voyageurs responded to the challenge in the 51st minute when Jacob Gramegna shoveled a pass to Liam Ezzard who made no mistake on his second game-winning goal of the season.
The Voyageurs defense was able to keep the Varsity Blues surging offense away from goalkeeper, Connor Vande Weghe, as the OUA's leader in saves (101), only saw one shot in the second half.
The Voyageurs are back in action next weekend as they welcome the UOIT Ridgebacks (Saturday) and Trent Excalibur (Sunday) to LU Soccer Field for their final two regular season home games. Game times are set for 2:15pm.
