MSOC | Voyageurs Blanked by Lakers, Retain Riley Gallo Cup

The Voyageurs men's soccer team was unable to build on their most recent victory over the Nipissing Lakers as they dropped Sunday's contest against the same opponent by a score of 2-0.

The play was dominated by the Lakers from the starting whistle as they applied pressure on the Voyageurs throughout the entire game. The breakthrough for the Lakers came in the 34th minute when a penalty call was awarded to Nipissing. Jamal Brown rose up to the occasion and very confidently deposited the ball at the back of the net.

The affair got hostile afterward when Daniel Correa was shown a red card and the hostilities continued until the final whistle as a total of eight yellow cards were shared amongst the two teams. The Lakers continued to have numerous chances to add an extra goal before the half but were unable to solve the Laurentian defence and goalkeeper.

The Lakers, with their renewed sense of optimism, came out into the second half searching for an insurance marker which they would find only ten minutes in when Owen O'Leary scored an unassisted goal to give Nipissing a 2-0 advantage. The Lakers would not look back and hold on to beat the Laurentian Voyageurs despite some added pressure from the Voyageurs late in the game.

Despite the loss, the Voyageurs retained the Riley Gallo Cup by the slimmest of margins.  The two schools split the four games on the weekend but, on the strength of the four goals they scored on the weekend, Laurentian earned the victory with a +1 goal differential.

The Voyageurs will look to get back to their winning ways when they visit the Carleton Ravens on Sunday at 3:15 pm.
