WHKY | Voyageurs Move Into Fourth Place With 4-1 Win Over Brock
On Sunday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team got back into the win column after beating Brock 4-1, and now claiming sole possession of fourth place.
After losing to Guelph yesterday and knowing that Brock had beaten the top seeded Nipissing Lakers last night, the Vees needed to get right down to business.
The first period was all Vees, as they outshot the Badgers 18-10 in the first 20 minutes. One of those 18 shots was a beauty off the stick of Brooklyn Davis who joined the rush and ripped a shot over the blocker of Badger goalie Jensen Murphy. Davis' goal at 14:22 was assisted by Amelie Samson and Myla McCormick.
The first frame ended with the Vees carrying a one goal lead and wasted little time increasing that lead in the second period. Myla McCormick, who played a strong game on Sunday, won an offensive face-off cleanly to Sam Morell at 1:32 of the second period, and Morell took two steps towards the middle of the ice and picked the top corner.
Just under three minutes after that, Brooklyn Davis' shot from the point was deflected in by Elissa Bertuzzi, giving the Voyageurs a 3-0 lead. Sam Morell picked up an assist on the Vees third goal. The second period finished with the Vees dominating the Badgers 3-0.
The Badgers finally cracked the seemingly unsolvable puzzle that was Karen Collins in net for the Vees at 9:47 of the third period. After a broken play, Christina Ieradi managed to squeak the puck through the arm of Collins for the Badgers only goal of the afternoon.
The Vees added an empty net tally in the last two minutes of the game when Taylor Weber raced after a loose puck and backhanded the puck into the empty Brock net. Maggie Brennan and Kennedy Lanktree added helpers on Webers empty net goal.
Karen Collins got the starting nod in goal for the Voyageurs on Sunday afternoon against the Badgers. The win was her first of the season and she looked calm, cool and collected in net as she stopped nearly everything she faced and showed great rebound control.
Assistant coach Willie Montpellier, happy with the team's effort on Sunday, said "we knew we needed to have a good, strong start today if we were going to be successful. Despite a bit of a lull in the second period, we had the start we wanted and came out on top."
Sunday's game was the final home game of 2016 for the Vees, as they travel to Nipissing and UoIT next weekend to play their final two games on the road. The Vees will surely be eager to get back at Nipissing next saturday and fans can catch that game on www.oua.tv.
