On Saturday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team opened up their regular season schedule at home as they welcomed the always tough Western Mustangs to Countryside Arena.
Western opened the scoring halfway into the first period when Mandy Pereira scored on the power play at 10:12. Pereira's goal was the only tally of the period and both teams headed to the dressing room for the first intermission with the Mustangs outshooting the Voyageurs 10-7.
Western struck again early in the second period, when Rachel Armstrong managed to beat Karen Collins, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.
The Vees cut the defecit in half when Mariah Beckett scored her first goal of the young season on the powerplay at 11:15 in the second period.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs galloped away quickly as they put in another three goals and a 5-1 victory.
Evra Levesque putting in two of three at 1:09 and 13:07 in the third and lastly April Clark finishing off the game with an empty net.
The Voyageurs will look to rebound in their second game of the season on Sunday as they host the Windsor Lancers at 1:50pm.
