WHKY | Voyageurs Help Guide Canada to Silver Medal
After a grueling two weeks in Siberia, a trio of Voyageurs will be returning home with medals around their necks. Bench boss, Stacey Colarossi, who served as head coach for Team Canada, along with forwards Morgan McCann and Taylor Weber, advanced to the gold medal game of the 29th Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, falling just short in the final, 2-0 to the hosts.
The women kicked off the tournament on March 1st with a 10-0 drubbing of China. McCann and Weber each made their presence felt as well with the former potting a goal and the latter notching a pair of assists. The team followed that up with a 4-0 win over Japan in a game that saw McCann add another goal and Weber added to her assist total with another helper.
After blanking the USA 1-0 in their third game, the Canadians finally allowed a puck past them in an 8-2 victory over Switzerland. Both Weber and McCann continued in their contributions with Weber picking up her first goal of the tournament along with a pair of assists and McCann adding a pair of goals.
The team closed out the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Russia but McCann continued her scoring ways, lighting the lamp for her fifth goal of the tournament. In the semi-final, against the Japanese, McCann scored her sixth goal of the tournament, firing home the insurance marker in a 5-1 victory to set up a rematch with Russia in the gold medal game.
In the final, the two teams played a fantastic game with opportunities at both ends of the ice. It wouldn't be until the midway point of the third period before one of the teams would break though as the Russian's scored on the power play with a seeing eye shot from the point. Despite continued Canadian pressure, the Russians would add an empty net goal to hand the Canadians a 2-0 defeat and the silver medal.
McCann finished the tournament tied for the team lead and third in the tournament with 6 goals while both McCann and Weber tied for third on the team in scoring with 6 points each.
