WSOC | Gee-Gees Tally Five to Upend Voyageurs in First Loss of Season

The Voyageurs women's soccer team looked to follow up their 2-2 tie with Carleton on Saturday afternoon with their first victory of the season against a tough Ottawa Gee-Gees lineup.

After a fairly quiet twenty minutes to start the game, highlighted by a key save from Voyageurs goalkeeper Heather McGregor in the 10th minute to keep the game scoreless, the Voyageurs generated some offensive pressure up the middle when Brianne Rodrigue shimmied through two defenders but couldn't put it past the post, narrowly missing out on her second of the young season. Less than two minutes later, the Gee-Gees countered with some offensive pressure of their own, capitalizing on some open space on the right side as Delaney Rickert-Hall put it over the left side of McGregor to put Ottawa up by one. Several minutes of midfield play followed the first tally of the game until the Gee-Gees Mikayla Morton scored her first of three in the 34th minute. The Gee-Gees headed into the half up 2-0.

The second half was dominated by the Gee-Gees offense as they managed to get off ten shots to the Voyageurs one. They increased their lead early in the half as Katherine Bearne slid one past Helaina Vansoelen in the 48th minute. Morton would then strike two more times before the final whistle blew netting her second and third of the game in the 75th and 78th minute.

The Voyageurs will look to regroup next weekend as they travel to Kingston to take on the RMC Paladins and Queen's Gaels.
