The women's soccer team hosted the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon for the only matchup between the two rivals this season. When the dust settled, it was the Lakers heading home with three points in their pocket.
The first half was a back and forth battle predominantly in the middle of the pitch. While the Lakers did put more balls towards the net, the back line of the Voyageurs kept those shots from distance and Hunter Jones was forced to make two, rather routine, saves in the half.
Just eight minutes into the second half, however, Nipissing's Jess Emmerton was able to get to the back post unmarked and headed in the tight cross to give the rival Lakers a 1-0 lead. The Voyageurs pushed for an equalizer but the tenth ranked team in the country was able to quell any buildup they had and the game ended 1-0 in favour of the Lakers.
The Voyageurs now head to Toronto this weekend to face the U of T Varsity Blues and the TMU Bold as they push for a playoff spot.
