The Laurentian Voyageurs Women's Soccer team hit the road this past weekend with a matcup on Saturday in Peterborough against the Trent Excalibur.

In the first game between these two in Sudbury, Trent came away with a 3-0 win giving the Voyageurs a chance at revenge against the Excalibur in their own backyard.

The game began with early pressure from the Excalibur as 3 corner kicks within the first 15 minutes created sustained pressure on the Voyageurs backline. However the Laurentian defense stood strong repelling the initial Trent threat.

That strong defense ended up being key for the Voyageurs as in the 18th minute a free kick in the Laurentian half was launched up the field and over the Trent backline. It kindly fell onto the foot of Mary Whiffen who out of nowhere was 1 on 1 against the goalkeeper. Her left footed strike from about 8 yards out nestled beautifully in the bottom corner giving the Voyageurs a 1-0 lead. After going ahead Laurnetian once again was forced to defend valiantly as they held onto their 1-0 advantage all the way to the halftime break.

The second half continued to see Trent push for an equalizer. The Laurentian defense continued to be put to the test and goalkeeper Hunter Jones was forced to make 8 total saves over the course of the game with the overall defensive unit standing resolute for the majority of the game.

Then it was in the 70th minute that the Voyageurs produced the killer blow. A move that began in Laurentian's own end saw Whiffen make a fantastic over the top pass to Emilie Galerne who quickly sent the ball low into the Trent box. As the keeper fumbled the ball it landed on the foot of Taylor Rombout who pounced on it and calmly placed it into the back of the net making it 2-0 and leading to a well deserved win and clean sheet for the Vees away from home.

After their win on Saturday the Voyageurs improved to 2-7-0 on the season and will round out their weekend Sunday when they travel to Oshawa  to face off against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks with the game set to begin at 1 pm.
