The men's basketball team headed to Guelph on Thursday in search of their first win of the season and left that to little chance as they cruised to an 87-66 victory over the Gryphons.
The game got off to a bit of a tentative start as a Guelph bucket with 4:47 left in the first quarter tied the game at 6. However, a Shawn Barthelemy triple shortly after sparked the Voyageurs to a 15-1 run to end the quarter. The second quarter saw Laurentian use extreme efficiency to grow their lead, shooting almost 70% from the field to open up a 17 point advantage heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter turned into a bit of a track meet as the teams put up a combined 48 points, helped by Guelph's five offensive rebounds, but the Voyageurs locked in on defence in the final frame, holding Guelph to 13 points and cruising to an 87-66 win.
Kamil Dia Hantchi paced the Voyageurs with 19 points on a tidy 7-9 shooting while Barthelemy and Daniel Muila-Mwaka each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and the point guard duo of Nginyu Ngala and Philippe Fandio combined for 13 assists in the contest. The men will return home to battle the Brock Badgers on Saturday at 6pm.
