The Voyageur Athletic Department and Laurentian University are saddened to announce the passing of former men's hockey coach, Registrar and Secretary of Senate, Jack Porter, on Tuesday, Feb. 25th, at Health Sciences North.

Porter was the first coach of the men's hockey program, beginning in 1962.  He continued to coach until 1973 before getting behind the bench again for the '76-'77 season and from '81-'83.  Under his tenure, the men's hockey team compiled a 131-52-14 record, winning seven OUA titles and earning six U SPORTS Championship appearances, culminating with a finals appearance in 1967; the team's lone trip to the national title game.

Away from the rink, Porter was the Registrar of Laurentian University and Secretary of Senate from 1975-1996.  Prior to joining Laurentian, Porter played four seasons at Clarkson University from 1952-56, tallying 151 points in 74 games.

Laurentian Athletic Director, Peter Hellstrom, reminisced about the former bench boss, saying, "Jack Porter was a true hockey pioneer in Sudbury, building a very successful university program that saw national success.  A Voyageurs Hall of Fame member and a mentor to many Voyageurs men's hockey players, he will be sadly missed by all."

Visitation will be held at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 29th, from 1:30pm-9pm.
