After securing a key victory in their lone game last weekend, the Laurentian Voyageurs women's basketball team were looking to follow that up with another big win Friday night when they hosted the 1-17 Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

With the crowd behind them, the Vees got off to a strong start, quickly jumping to a 10-2 lead, giving them a solid early advantage. The Ridgebacks' offense struggled throughout the first quarter, with Laurentian playing outstanding defense. The Vees ended the quarter with a 19-11 lead.

The second quarter was more of the same, as Laurentian's defense remained the focal point. The Vees outrebounded the Ridgebacks 13-6, not allowing a single offensive rebound in the second quarter. They also forced Ontario Tech into nine turnovers, leading to multiple fast-break opportunities. Laurentian outscored the Ridgebacks 16-6 in the second, taking a 35-17 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw the game plan remain unchanged, and although many thought the defense couldn't get any better, it did. Laurentian did not allow a single field goal in the third quarter, as the Ridgebacks went 0-11 from the field with their only three points coming from the free-throw line. On the offensive end, Laurentian continued to be steady, with Emilie Lafond leading the charge, scoring 8 of her game-high 15 points in the third. Laurentian took a commanding 33-point lead into the fourth quarter.

With the large lead, the Voyageurs were able to give some of their bench players valuable minutes. Eleven different players saw action in the fourth, with Megan Axiak scoring all nine of her points during the final frame. Laurentian cruised to a 75-34 victory.

Standout performances for Laurentian included Lafond, who finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds, as well as rookie Cadence Pecore, who added 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

The Voyageurs wrap up their weekend on Saturday afternoon with their annual game at the Sudbury Arena at 1 p.m., where they will face the Queen's Gaels.
