WBB | Voyageurs Start Fast Before Fading in Loss to Gaels

As the Laurentian Voyageurs women's basketball team dove into their second game of their weekend away, they hoped to bounce back from their loss to the York Lions on Friday. Unfortunately, the women were could only keep pace with the #4 ranked Queen's Gaels for half the game, leading for much of the first half before ultimately falling 68-43.

In typical Vees fashion, the women jumped into the game full of energy and drive. The first period saw the Voyageurs clinging to their lead by a couple of points and able to stay a few steps ahead of the Gaels. Ending the period with a score of 20-19 for the Vees, Kayla Deschatelets led the way with 6 points.

The second period was a close battle as the Voyageurs held onto their lead for most of the quarter, but gave it up to the Gaels in the final seconds of the period with a foul by Mackenzie Robinson awarding Queen's the opportunity to make 2 points on a free throw and another 3 on a jump shot. The women ended the half with a score of 34-29 to Queen's.

After the half, the Gaels took their lead and ran with it. The Voyageurs could not keep up with the second wind that hit Queen's, ending the third quarter 14 points behind the Gaels with a score of 51-37. With a low scoring period for the Voyageurs overall, Mackenzie Robinson led the scoring with 3 points.

Despite their best efforts, the Voyageurs were unable to close the gap in the final quarter, stumbling as the Gaels made accurate baskets and kept a tight defense. Ending the game with a score of 68-43, the Voyageurs continued their losing streak for the weekend.

Kayla Deschatelets and Mackenzie Robinson led the Voyageurs in scoring with 11 points each, with Adriane Bruni leading for rebounds with 6, and Emily Tinnes leading assists with 3.

The Voyageurs will be back in action as they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 6pm in the Ben F. Avery Gym. Until then, you can stay up to date with the Vees on www.luvoyageurs.com or by following @LUVoyageurs on Twitter.
