WBB | Gee-Gees Run Away From Voyageurs
The Voyageurs headed to Ottawa to battle the Gee-Gees on Wednesday night in the first round of the OUA playoffs. After hanging tough for most of the game, a lopsided fourth quarter would seal the deal as the Voyageurs fell, 78-39.
The first quarter was a see-saw affair with the teams trading the lead early but an 8-0 run spurred the Gee-Gees to an 18-12 lead after 10 minutes. In the second quarter the Voyageurs continued to fight, continuously staying within two to four points of Ottawa. However, a sequence that saw the Gee-Gees score six points in seven seconds late in the half quickly saw that lead grow to 10 and ultimately 14 by halftime. Maria La Rosa was a perfect 3-3 from three in the half while Héléna Lamoureux poured in nine points in the second quarter to keep the Voyageurs within range.
The third quarter was a much more defensive battle with the Voyageurs holding the Gee-Gees to just 14 points but, unfortunately, they could only muster 11 of their own and the Ottawa lead grew to 17 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, a combination of cold shooting and ball security issues saw the women get outscored 26-4 in the quarter and ultimately 78-39 in the game.
That playoff defeat wrapped up the solid season from the Voyageurs as the team looks to build off of this campaign into 2022-23.
