The Voyageurs started their Southwestern Ontario road trip with a tough 68-59 defeat to the Western Mustangs in London on Friday.

Laurentian started off slow allowing the Mustangs a 11-3 lead only 3 minutes into the game. It would be a tough road back for the Voyageurs but a couple of important three point shots made by Megan Axiak and important defensive stops limited the damage to just 22-15 as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter.

In the second Laurentian defense began making some key stops at key times, limiting the Western offense to just 21% from the field in the quarter and 0-7 from three point range. This stellar defense with a solid offensive output meant that the Voyageurs hit the locker room tied at 34.

In the third quarter, however, the Mustangs offense came out red-hot right from the start of the second half, scoring 13 straight points to start the second half.  They also limited the Voyageurs offense to just 8 points in the third and forced 11 turnovers leaving Laurentian in a big 57-42 hole going into the final ten minutes.

Although the Voyageurs put up a strong fight near the end, outscoring the Mustangs 17-11 in the fourth, it wasn't enough as Western would close out the game with a 68-59 win over Laurentian

Tonight's key performers were Sydney Tabin who had 12 points and 7 rebounds and a big game off the bench from Megan Axiak with 16 points along with a very respectable 5-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Voyageurs go again Saturday as they finish their Southwestern Ontario road trip against the Windsor Lancers.
