WBB - Voyageurs emerge victorious in a thrilling contest against the Lions
On Friday night, the women's basketball team hosted the York University Lions in their first game of the weekend. In a thrilling game, the Voyageurs emerged victorious by three points, winning 70-67.
Both teams started the game at a slower pace, as they were both scoreless for the first two minutes. The Lions scored the first point of the game with a free throw, which Aneisha Rismond answered with a jump shot thirty seconds later. Less than a minute later, Emilie Lafond netted her first two points, followed by a layup from Rismond. While driving to the net, Claudia Pellerin got fouled and went to the free-throw line, ultimately sinking both shots. Halfway through the quarter, Pellerin, Melanie Cloutier, and Lafond scored a combination of 10 points, giving Laurentian a five-point lead. The Lions came back shortly after and picked up the lead by three points going into the next ten minutes.
In the second quarter, the slower pace was repeated by both teams, until Pellerin and Lafond scored a layup. At the four-minute mark, Audrey-Anne Labreche scored her first layup and 3-pointer of the game, while Pellerin added another two points on the board, leading to a timeout call from the Lions. With less than two minutes left in before the half, Lafond, Molly Adams, and Pellerin each scored a layup, equalizing the game at 39-a-piece.
Coming back from halftime, Pellerin wasted no time and scored a 3-pointer twenty seconds in. Lafond and Rismond each scored a layup once again and Labreche made two free throws two minutes later. To end the quarter, Amber May made a 3-point shot. At this point, the Voyageurs were trailing the Lions by one point.
To finish the game, Cloutier started strong with a layup in the first minute and Lauren Robertson-Martin scored her first layup of the game. Within a minute, Lafond scored a layup and made two free throws, which led to another timeout call by the Lions. With three minutes to go in the game, Rismond netted a jump shot and Pellerin scored a combined 6 points. In the last thirty seconds, Robertson-Martin scored another layup and Cloutier made a free throw. Although the game was back and forth on both sides, the Voyageurs were able to pull off a 70-67 win.
The standout performers were Claudia Pellerin with 22 points and 6 rebounds, Emilie Lafond with 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Aneisha Rismond with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The women are back in action on Saturday, as they take on the McMaster Marauders in the Ben Avery. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm once again.
