The women's basketball team headed to Guelph on Thursday to do battle with the Gryphons. Despite going toe to toe in the final three frames, an 11 point deficit after the opening period was too much to overcome as the Voyageurs fell 57-44.
The game started well as Emilie Lafond opened the game's scoring and the teams traded baskets early on. However, a cold spell that saw the Voyageurs score a single point from the 7:55 mark of the first quarter until the 9:19 mark of second quarter resulted in an 11 point hole, which would hold until the halftime break.
Coming out in the third quarter, the Voyageurs were looking to chip away at the deficit but a run of tough shooting, hitting only two field goals in the quarter, saw the Gryphons grow their lead. That lead continued to grow, hitting a 22 point gap midway through the fourth quarter, before the Voyageurs found their stroke. Unfortunately it was too little, too late as the Gryphons handed the Voyageurs a 57-44 defeat.
First year point guard, Cadence Pecore, led the team with 11 points while Emilie Lafond pulled down eight rebounds in the loss. The women will return home on Saturday afternoon to host the Brock Badgers with tipoff scheduled for 4pm.
