Friday night saw the Voyageurs women's basketball team host the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold at the Ben Avery Gym where they ended up falling short of a win, losing 70-54.

The first quarter was a very tightly played 10 minutes that saw both teams struggle shooting and coming out of the gates with high-energy defensive strategies. That hard work on defense paid off as the Voyageurs found themselves up three as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter. They showed the Bold they were no pushovers, forcing six turnovers and limiting Toronto to just 28% from the field.

In the second, it was a different story, as the Voyageurs defense lost its rhythm allowing a trio of three point makes from the Bold and, although the scoring wasn't as efficient as their opposition in the 2nd, it was overall a very solid first half from Laurentian being down just 4 at 33-29.

However, it was in the third quarter, as it feels it so often is where the Voyageurs really struggled to keep pace with their opposition. For the second straight quarter TMU were able to put up 23 points in a quarter, a figure which Laurentian just could not come close to matching. The third quarter ended with TMU extending their lead to 56-41.

The Laurentian defense tightened up, holding the Bold to just 14 points in fourth quarter but it seemed too little, too late, for the Voyageurs, as they could not manufacture a game-ending run to bring them back into the game. The final score ended Toronto Metropolitan, 70, Laurentian, 54.

Tonight's key performers were Héléna Lamoureux, who picked up a team high 16 points, and a solid performance off the bench from Arielle Douillette, who picked up 10 points on 3-5 shooting from three.

The Voyageurs end their weekend as they host the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night at the Ben Avery Gym as they look to secure their third win of the season.
