WBB | Voyageurs Upended by Gryphons in Home Return

After two weeks on the road, the Voyageurs women's basketball team returned home to a packed Ben Avery Gym on Friday night to take on the Guelph Gryphons.

The Voyageurs were happy to be home as they got the crowd into it early scoring the game's first basket and keeping a tough Gryphons squad to within five at the end of the first quarter. However, even after a surge of energy in the second quarter in which they outscored the Gryphons 15-12, the Voyageurs seemed unable to come back from their early deficit. The second half, though competitive and entertaining, ultimately resulted in the Guelph Gryphons taking the victory over Laurentian with a final score of 66-57.

Top performer for the Voyageurs was L'Ashante Henry off the bench with 18 points and 13 rebounds.  Other notable performances came from guards Mackenzie Robinson and Emily Tinnes; Robinson with 13 points and 5 steals, and Tinnes adding 12 points and 5 assists.

A major contributor to Laurentian's defeat came at the hands of Gryphon guard Skyla Minaker, who had 22 points in the ball game- 9 of which coming from beyond the arc.

Another flaw in the Voyageurs' game came in both their visits and success rate from the free throw line. Laurentian visited the charity stripe a mere 7 times compared to the Gryphons 13 attempts. To add to the difference, the Voyageurs shot 57.1% on their foul shots, while Guelph was successful on 84.6% of their free throw attempts.

The Lady Vees will look to bounce back tomorrow night, again on home turf where they will take on the Algoma Thunderbirds at 6pm.
