WBB | Voyageurs Blown Out by Lions

WBB | Voyageurs Blown Out by Lions

The Voyageurs women's basketball team had a tough outing on Saturday night when they lost to the York Lions by a score of 75-48.

The Voyageurs went toe-to-toe with the Lions in the first quarter as they trailed by just two at its end. But unfortunately, the Lions stepped up their offensive style of play in the second quarter and increased their lead by nine points at the quarter's end. The largest lead that the Lions acquired was of 12 points which was eventually reduced to nine. The Lions were led by Lauren Golding with 10 points and Megan MacLeod with eight points. Gabby Schaffner stood like a shining star for the Voyageurs as accumulated nine points in the half was followed closely by Héléna Lamoureaux with five points. Neither team shot incredibly well from the field as the Lions shot 36.8% while the Voyageurs shot 25.9%.

The Voyageurs did not fare much better in the second half. The Lions opened a 16 point lead in the third quarter with big contributions from Lauren Golding. The Voyageurs were outscored 18-14 in the quarter and the scoreboard read 49-36 in favour of the Lions at the completion mark of the quarter. The fourth was the worst quarter for the Voyageurs as they were outscored 26-12. The Voyageurs managed to cut the lead to nine points with 7:10 and then 6:14 left to play but the Lions replied with an 8-0 run to stretch the lead to 15 points. The scoring run sealed the deal as the Voyageurs could not recover from it and eventually lost the match by a score of 75-48.

The Voyageurs will now travel back home and take on the Algoma Thunderbirds on Friday, January 31 to kick off the last home weekend of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm at Ben Avery Gymnasium.
