WBB - Golden Hawks too strong for Voyageurs

On Friday night, the women's basketball team took on the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks, in their first game of the away weekend. The Voyageurs lost the game 68-48, making it their third loss of the season.

Laurentian's Rileigh Smith opened up scoring for the Voyageurs with a layup, followed by a layup by Emilie Lafond. The Golden Hawks were ahead, but not for long as Claudia Pellerin scored the first 3 point shot of the game and Amber May repeated the same play. The Voyageurs were down 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Golden Hawks scored two free throws and one layup, while the Voyageurs only made two free throws. Third year guard Megan Axiak netted a 3-point shot to end the quarter 35-22, with the Golden Hawks still in the lead.

Coming back from the half, Pellerin scored another 3-point shot, with a quick answer from the Golden Hawks, as they netted a 3-point shot as well. At the seven-minute mark, Smith added two more points on the board and Melanie Cloutier made her first layup of the game a few minutes later. The Voyageurs were still trailing the Golden Hawks 56-39 going into the last ten minutes of the game.

To start off the last quarter, Pellerin scored a layup, meanwhile the Golden Hawks scored 5 points within one minute. The Voyageurs called a timeout to get arranged on both offence and defence a few seconds later. At the five-minute mark, Lauren Robertson-Martin scored two free throws, Molly Adams scored a jump shot and Aneisha Rismond scored 2 points. To end the game, the Golden Hawks got a foul from Axiak, resulting in two made free throws. The Voyageurs lost the first game of the weekend 68-48.

The standout performers were Claudia Pellerin with 10 points and 5 rebounds, Melanie Cloutier with 8 points and 7 rebounds, Rileigh Smith and Megan Axiak with 7 points each.

The Voyageurs are back in action against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon. The game is scheduled to start at 4pm.
