WBB - Lancers proved to be too strong for Voyageurs
On Friday night, the Voyageurs hosted the Windsor Lancers in the Ben Avery. The Lancers proved to be too strong for Laurentian, taking the 69-36 victory.
In the first quarter, the Voyageurs were scoreless until Audrey-Anne Labreche and Lauren Robertson-Martin both made a free throw. With one minute left in the quarter, Labreche scored a 3-point shot, ending scoring for the Voyageurs for the first quarter. The Lancers were ahead 19-5.
In the second quarter, Claudia Pellerin made a jump shot, meanwhile, the Lancers kept scoring baskets. At the three-minute mark, Robertson-Martin scored a layup, followed by another scored by Pellerin, which led to a timeout call by Windsor. Pellerin also made two more free throws. Later on, Pellerin scored a three-pointer, which were the last points scored by the Voyageurs in this quarter. The Voyageurs were trailing 36-16.
Coming back from halftime, Voyageurs' Melanie Cloutier scored first and made two free throws. Forward Aneisha Rismond scored her first two points of the game at the sixth-minute mark, then again, a minute later. Pellerin, Robertson-Martin, and Cloutier scored a combination of 5 points within a minute, giving Laurentian a bit of momentum. Later on, Molly Adams made her mark, scoring a 3-pointer, and Robertson-Martin made two more free throws. The Voyageurs were 25 points away from catching up going into the last quarter.
To finish the game, the Lancers scored only two baskets within four minutes, as the Voyageurs were unable to score any points. With three minutes left, Adams scored another 3-point shot and Amber May made one successful free throw attempt to conclude the scoring. The Voyageurs dropped the game, with a score of 69-36.
The standout performers were Claudia Pellerin with 11 points and 4 rebounds, Lauren Robertson-Martin with 7 points and 6 rebounds, and Melanie Cloutier with 7 rebounds.
The Voyageurs are back in action Saturday, as they take on the Western Mustangs in a triple header day. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm at the Sudbury Arena.
