WBB - Voyageurs suffer defeat in their second game against the Gee-Gees

The women's basketball team traveled to Ottawa to take on the uOttawa Gee-Gees in a two-game road trip. The Voyageurs put up a great effort but were defeated 71-56 by the #2 team in the OUA East standings.

To start the game, the Voyageurs were scoreless for three minutes, when Emilie Lafond made a jump shot and Claudia Pellerin scored the first three-pointer for Laurentian a minute later. At the four-minute mark, Pellerin scored a jump shot and Laurentian called a timeout shortly after. The Vees took the lead a few seconds later, with Lafond scoring 4 points. The lead was shortly lived, as the Gee-Gees were up 15-12 going into the next quarter.

In the second quarter, Lafond scored the first two points for Laurentian, followed by a three-point shot by Amber May. At the sixth-minute mark, Princess Bernardino scored her first points of the game with a 3-point shot, which led to a timeout call by uOttawa. Later on, May, Pellerin, and Audrey-Anne Labreche scored a combination of 10 points, giving the Voyageurs a 3-point lead going into halftime.

Coming back from the half, Lafond scored 5 points within 30 seconds, and Rileigh Smith scored her first jump shot. The Gee-Gees came back halfway through the quarter, having a four-point lead over the Vees, until Labreche and Lafond scored 5 points together. With one minute left before the last quarter, Bernardino made another successful three-point basket, which left the Voyageurs in a 49-48 lead.

In the last ten minutes, both teams were scoreless for four minutes, up to the point where the Gee-Gees scored two free throws. Halfway through, Labreche scored a jump shot, leading to another timeout call by the Gee-Gees. One minute later, Lafond and Labreche scored a combination of 5 points, which concluded scoring for the Voyageurs, while the Gee-Gees got organized offensively, leading to a 71-56 defeat for Laurentian.

The standout performers were Emilie Lafond with 19 points and 13 rebounds, Audrey-Anne Labreche with 11 points, and Claudia Pellerin also with 11 points.

The Voyageurs are back in action Saturday, as they take on the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa. Tip off is scheduled for 6pm.
