WBB | Poor First Quarter Leads to Voyageurs Defeat against Ottawa

After finishing their first away weekend of 2025 with a split in Kingston and Oshawa the Laurentian Voyageurs women's basketball team hosted the Ottawa GeeGees Friday night for the first game of the new year at the Ben Avery Gym.
The Vees would go into their matchup Friday night as definite underdogs with the GeeGees coming into the game with a record of 11-2 and winners in six of their last eight games.
The first quarter proved exactly why Ottawa is regarded as one of the best in the division. After the game began with both teams exchanging baskets, the middle portion of the first saw the GeeGees go on a 15-4 run. Led by 11 first quarter points from Natsuki Szczokin Ottawa would end the first up 26-11 leaving the Voyageurs in a big hole early on.
Laurentian would battle back in the second quarter as their season's leading scorer Emilie Lafond would put the offense on her back going a perfect 4-4 from the field in the second putting up 9 of her game high 16 points. Laurentian managed to trim the lead down to 12 going into halftime with the score sitting at 41-29 going into the break.
In the third both teams' offences would go cold. The Laurentian defense improved drastically since the first quarter of the game but with the deficit they faced their ability to only score 12 points in the third quarter played right into the hands of the GeeGees who brought the lead back up to 14 going into the final ten minutes.
In the end Ottawa would extend their lead even further in the fourth as they would end up defeating the Voyageurs quite convincingly with a 22 point margin as the game would finish with a final score of 74-52.
Laurentian's top performer on the night was the aforementioned Lafond who put up a game high 16 points along with four rebounds and two assists. Cadence Pecore and Aneisha Rismond also pitched in with double digit points as they would put up 11 and 12 points respectively.
The Voyageurs will end the weekend Saturday night against the Carleton Ravens with a scheduled 6pm start from Ben Avery.
