WBB | Gaels Pull Away in 4th, Hand Voyageurs Season Opening Loss

The Laurentian Women's basketball team suffered their first defeat of the season against a strong Queen's team by a score of 68-52 at the ARC in Kingston.

The first quarter started off with both teams having effective offense in different ways. Laurentian had success scoring inside the paint and attacking rebounds. Bailey Tabin led the way with 6 points in the quarter along with 2 offensive rebounds and 3-4 shooting in quarter leading to solid first ten minutes for the Vees only trailing 17-13 due to a trifecta of threes hit by the Gaels finishing the quarter off strong. In the second quarter Laurentian continued to go toe-to-toe with the Gaels playing strong defense limiting them to just 13 points and holding them to below 25% shooting. It was a defensive battle from both teams and the Vees went into the half-time interval down just two 30-28.

In the second half, however, Queen's began to show just a little bit more sharpness which ended up being the Voyageurs downfall. In the third quarter it was the Gaels defense that forced Laurentian into 8 turnovers in the quarter, firmly putting momentum in the home team's corner for the final ten minutes. This momentum led Queen's into their best defensive period of the game just when Laurentian needed to mount their comeback. The Vees were held to just 9 points in the final ten minutes shooting just 25% and adding another 5 turnovers for a total of 14 in the second half alone. The game finished with a final score of 68-52 in favour of the home team.  Bailey Tabin led the Voyageurs with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat.

The women look to bounce back and finish the road trip with a win on Friday with a trip to Oshawa to face-off against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
